We have the results from the Get Happy! Study and want you to see what we have learned

Here is the preliminary study data…

  • More than 2,800 people signed up for the study
  • 1,500 people started the study
  • 800 have finished the whole study. Another follow up will be going out with hopes to garner a total of 1,200 people to fill out the final assessment.

Here are some fascinating study findings…

  1. Our study population was significantly more burned out and depressed than the general population.
  2. Depression, Happiness, Burnout, and Work/Life Balance all showed significant improvement after the intervention and in the initial post study analysis. This was likely even better than all other previous smaller studies done in only healthcare settings.
  3. Participants enjoyed the program and when asked “Would you be interested in other Bounce Back programs?” responded:
    • 75% yes
    • 18% maybe
  4.  They would recommend this exercise to a friend and it was seen as a favorable way to spend their time:
    • 92% yes
  5.  86% want to participate again next year
  6. I feel my mood has improved:
    • 70% agreed
    • 23% neutral

Opportunities…

As you know, we set out to “go where no community has ever gone before.” Being the first to roll out a study of this kind using texting, we had a few blips in our process. All issues have now been addressed and we are confident that we will have an even better experience next time around.  We hope to do another round of the study as an option for people again within the next 6 months.

Beginning in January, we will be offering presentations around the benefits of gratitude on your life. We know it’s not happiness that brings us gratitude, it’s gratitude that brings us happiness. Thank You to each of you who completed the 14 nights of “3 Good Things!”

Your response to this first of its kind national event was overwhelming! More than 1350 people completed the study!! Way to go!!

Being the first to offer this type of experience came with a few glitches. Know that we appreciate your patience and your feedback. We learned a great deal that can be used to help us provide a better experience for you and for other communities. For example:

  • We had a couple of misspellings in our name. Thanks for recognizing that we are the Bounce Back Project!
  • Some people weren’t able to submit their responses after 11 pm. We learned this happened because the “clock” on the east coast interpreted this response as occurring after midnight (a new day).
  • We had one evening where the text message did not go out. This happened because of the number of responses we received for the study. We followed up the next day to ensure that we had a reserve for sending / receiving texts.

Practice 3 Good Things!

If you didn’t get a chance to participate in 3 Good Things, don’t worry. You can still participate in this activity and experience the positive health benefits.

  • Start on a Monday and each night before you sleep, write down 3 Good Things that happened to you.
  • Do this each day for 2 weeks. If you miss a day, it’s okay. Just start off with where you left off.
  • Studies have shown that completing this simple activity will increase your happiness and decrease feelings of depression for six months!

On October 20, 2015 Dr. Bryan Sexton, an Associate Professor with the Duke University School of Medicine, shared simple strategies that can promote health through happiness with hundreds of individuals from the Buffalo and Monticello communities.

The strategies he shared were simple: practice 3 Good Things everyday for 2 weeks (it takes less than 3 minutes). Good memories slip away too quickly, while the bad ones stick like Velcro — especially when we’re tired. 3 Good Things retrains our brains so that we can remember the good things & our role in bringing them about. Studies have shown that practicing 3 Good Things is as strong as taking anti-depressants and the effects can last for six months.
